Makaab Reacts To Hunt’s Shock City Exit

Posted on December 2, 2025

Renowned football agent Mike Makaab admits that he has been left in awe upon learning of astute coach Gavin Hunt’s departure from Betway Premiership newcomers Durban City.

The club announced on Monday afternoon that Hunt had left the Ethekwini-based outfit by mutual consent after a review of the footballing strategy conducted by the club’s Board of Directors.

His latest exit marked a 10th closed chapter of his career having taken charge of Seven Stars, Hellenic, Black Leopards, Moroka Swallows, SuperSport United (won three league titles), Bidvest Wits (won one title), Kaizer Chiefs, Chippa United and SuperSport (second stint).

Speaking on Gagasi FM, Makaab reacted to being caught off-guard by the club’s decision though he was also quick to touch on how it may be factors from within the club the public is not aware of.

“Absolutely out of the blue! I know there was speculation in the last few days about it, but I have to be honest, I am surprised,” he said.

“When I look at the club, it’s a newly promoted club. There are a number of First Division players that have been promoted and have retained their place within the PSL squad.

“And, I think, and the fact that ex-Maritzburg, now Durban City, find themselves in the eighth position in the league table, and I think if I’m not mistaken, they’ve accumulated 19 points, I’m surprised, I really am surprised.

“But again, it’s easy to comment on the outside without knowing what’s truly happened in the corridors leading up to this [Gavin leaving].”
