Kaizer Chiefs midfielders Thulani Mabaso has spoken on making his senior debut for Amakhosi in Tuesday’s 1-0 Betway Premiership win over Golden Arrows.

The 21 year old came off the bench in the 74th minute and impressed in his brief time on the field. Having captain Kaizer Chiefs last season to the DStv Diski Challenge title, Mabaso has now made the step up to the first team squad.

Mabaso – ‘Sometimes you only get one chance’

“I think everyone knows that playing for Chiefs is everyone’s dream. From the moment I stepped on the pitch I thought, “just believe in yourself”, because in life sometimes you only get one chance so I have to make the most of it,” Mabaso told the official Kaizer Chiefs website.

Mabaso is Soweto born-and-bred, starting his footballing journey playing for the Meadowlands Academy. After the game, he was able to celebrate with some colleagues from his home club.

“Those were some of my coaches and teammates from Meadowlands Academy when I was about 12 years old, who came to support me. It was really emotional, a great feeling, seeing them there to support me. It is something you can’t really explain. It reminds you of where you come from. A special moment that will remain in my heart forever.”

The win over Arrows lifted Chiefs up to third in the Betway Premiership, and within two points of leaders Sundowns. Chiefs did break a decade without a trophy when they won last season’s Nedbank Cup. And Mabaso hopes he can help the side win more silverware this season.

‘I want to win trophies for Kaizer Chiefs’

“I want to win trophies for Kaizer Chiefs because this is a big club, a winning team, so we have to win cups and make our fans happy,” Mabaso added.

“Our supporters spend their hard-earned money, sometimes their last cents, to come and watch us, and we have to give our all on the pitch for them as well as us. I promise to work my hardest to help us to put some silverware in the trophy cabinet.”

Mabaso’s next chance to shine for Chiefs could come as soon as Sunday, when Chiefs take on Zesco United of Zamiba in a Caf Confederation Cup Group D match in Ndola.
