Lucas Ribeiro pens emotional farewell letter to Mamelodi Sundowns fans

Brazilian forward Lucas Ribeiro has officially parted ways with Mamelodi Sundowns, bringing an end to a successful yet turbulent two-year spell with the Betway Premiership champions.

In a heartfelt message posted on Instagram, the 26-year-old expressed deep gratitude to the club, his team-mates, and the Masandawana supporters.

‘Full of emotions’

“From the very first day I arrived, I gave my all, on and off the field, to earn my place and proudly defend Mamelodi Sundowns,” Ribeiro said.

“These past two years have been incredible, full of emotions… I will always carry in my heart the memories of the goals, the assists, the trophies, and the magical nights with you that made me feel at home.”

A Glittering Spell with a Difficult Exit

Ribeiro leaves the club after a trophy-laden stint that saw him:

  • Win two PSL titles
  • Reach the CAF Champions League final
  • Claim the PSL Golden Boot
  • Crowned the 2024/25 PSL Player of the Season

However, his departure comes in the shadow of a contentious transfer saga.

While Ribeiro pushed for a move abroad, Mamelodi Sundowns insisted he honour the remainder of his contract, prompting the player to escalate the matter to FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber.

“I wish I could have said goodbye in a better way,” Ribeiro admitted, “but please know that my love for you is endless.”

What’s Next for the PSL Star?

Ribeiro’s next destination is yet to be confirmed, though he has been linked with clubs in Belgium, France, Brazil, and Qatar, especially following his standout performances at this year’s FIFA Club World Cup.

While Ribeiro’s exit brings closure to a successful chapter, it also highlights the ongoing tension between African clubs and star players eyeing moves to bigger leagues.

His farewell may mark the end of his time in South Africa, but his legacy at Chloorkop remains intact.

“To my team-mates, my second family, thank you for every battle, every title, every smile. You will always be my brothers,” Ribeiro concluded.

Will Lucas Ribeiro’s departure prove to be a major blow for Mamelodi Sundowns?
