Khune singles out Kaizer Chiefs star Mdu Shabalala

Posted on February 12, 2026

Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune has weighed in with some thoughts on winger Mduduzi Shabalala. They might come as a surprise.

Khune backs Shabalala as a leader

Itumeleng Khune has praised Mduduzi Shabalala’s fearlessness and leadership ability and called for the fans to keep backing the 22-year-old.

“But Mdu Shabalala has done tremendously well for himself and the club. He has been the one Kaizer Chiefs player who has been knocking on that Bafana Bafana door, and the supporters must keep being patient with him.”

Itu compares Shabalala to Nkatha at Kaizer Chiefs

Goalkeeping icon Khune has drawn parallels between Shabalala and Kingston Nkatha.

“He reminds me of Kingston Nkatha’s situation, where, as a captain, I had to intervene and calm the fans down,” Khune continued.

“We need that kind of leadership in today’s generation. They need to come together as players and fight for each other. Mdu is making good runs, he is creating chances, and he finds himself in good scoring positions.
