Khune Fumes After Penalty Decision Against Stellies

Posted on January 27, 2026

Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune has called on the improvement of officiating following Stellenbosch FC‘s defeat to CR Belouizdad in the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday.

Stellies went down 2-0 to the Algerian outfit at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers with goals from Abdennour Belhocini and a late controversial penalty by Farid El Melali after Mohamed Ali Ben Hammouda went down in the box.

The former Bafana Bafana shot-stopper was not pleased with how Hammouda tumbled down in the 18-yard area calling on the officiating to improve after some questionable decisions at the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

“You can see he [Hammouda] was looking for it. He went down way before he was even touched on his chest,” Khune said on SABC Sport.

“He was looking for it and I think the referee was also ready to blow.

“No touch whatsoever! I don’t like talking about referees but the standard needs to go up.

“We just witnessed a very poor officiating in the AFCON and we can’t be witnessing this in club football.”
