Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye says the side’s starlet Mfundo Vilakazi cannot carry the club as yet, despite his strong showing at the U20 FIFA World Cup.
The South African junior international has featured five times for Amakhosi this season, including in the goalless draw against Siwelele FC in the league in midweek where he played for 70 minutes.
That result saw Chiefs move into fourth position on the Betway Premiership log with 16 points in nine matches.
Obrigado’s pace and creativity has been hailed as the spark needed by Chiefs, as they struggle to get results in the league but Khanye believes the youngster cannot carry the side right now because of his age and also because his club coaches are playing him in a wrong position.
“I don’t think that boy is a winger and people need to understand that Mfundo can’t carry Chiefs now,” said Khanye on iDiski TV.
“Yes he can’t, Chiefs is a big team. Yes he’s got the talent and I always say he can’t carry Chiefs now, not now.
“The U20 team is a different environment. All I’m saying is that the coach is playing Mfundo in a wrong position, he should be number 10, Mdu [Shabalala] should be on the wing probably or even [Wandile] Duba or even [Glody] Lilepo.
“But even at number 10 he cannot carry Chiefs. Lindo [Pep] mentioned something very important last month that in big teams in South Africa number 10s are senior players or internationals like [Lucas] Ribeiro and [Gaston] Sirino because you need a matured player, a big hearted player.
“There are young players like Rele [Relebohile Mofokeng] but Mfundo is not the same type of player as Rele. He does have talent but he can’t carry Chiefs.”
