Kaizer Chiefs were forced to take their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round clash to the Dobsonville Stadium.
It was a decision that proved to be a huge success, with a packed crowd spurring the Glamour Boys on.
Majority of the time, Amakhosi play at a rather empty FNB Stadium when at home.
Given its 94 000 capacity, filling it up for games against teams other than Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates has been a challenge.
Kaizer Chiefs boss confirms venue blow
Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jnr has confirmed that the Amakhosi will not be able to use the Dobsonville for their upcoming home CAF Confederation Cup group stages matches.
This is because the stadium is not accredited to host CAF group stage games.
“So Dobsonville isn’t accredited stadium for the group stages. So it was just for the prelims. I think it’s a very important question because I know the atmosphere was amazing,” the Kaizer Chiefs boss said as quoted by Soccer Laduma when asked whether the club will use the venue again.
“They came out of their numbers. Their energy was amazing. But unfortunately, and it’s important for us to say, is that Dobsonville isn’t accredited for the CAF confed stages. So it won’t be a venue that we’re able to use.”
Amakhosi learn CAF fate
The Glamour Boys recently learn their group stages fate. Kaizer Chiefs have been drawn alongside Egyptian giants Zamalek and Al Masry FC.
The group is completed by Zambian giants ZESCO United FC. This means Chiefs will make two trips to North Africa during the group stages.
It remains to be seen which venues the Amakhosi use to host their opponents at.
