Kaizer Chiefs’ Transfer Moves Hit Legal Snag in Pursuit of Spurs Duo

Kaizer Chiefs’ squad rebuild has hit unexpected turbulence as their pursuit of Cape Town Spurs talents Asanele Velebayi (22) and Luke Baartman (18) faces a legal challenge. The Soweto giants had reportedly agreed to sign the promising duo following Spurs’ dramatic double relegation to the amateur ABC Motsepe League.

The situation turned contentious when neither player reported for Spurs’ pre-season training, with the Ikamva-based club insisting both remain under contract. Spurs have issued formal recall notices and threatened legal action, extending similar warnings to midfielder Liam Bern regarding his proposed move to AmaZulu FC.

PSL regulations suggest players become free agents when their club drops to amateur status, but Spurs chairman Ari Efstathiou maintains: “We have valid contracts and will protect our interests.” The standoff could delay Chiefs’ plans to integrate the attacking pair into their revamped squad.

Amid the uncertainty, Chiefs confirmed the signing of experienced midfielder Siphesihle Ndlovu, their sixth acquisition this window. The 28-year-old joins fellow new arrivals including Thabiso Monyane and Ethan Chislett as coach Molefi Ntseki reshapes his squad.

With pre-season preparations underway, the Naturena hierarchy faces a race against time to resolve the legal impasse. Should Chiefs succeed, Velebayi’s pace and Baartman’s creativity could prove shrewd additions to their attacking options. However, the saga serves as a reminder of the complexities clubs face in South Africa’s often-murky transfer market.

As one Chiefs insider noted: “We’re working through proper channels, but sometimes these processes take unexpected turns.” The coming days will reveal whether the Glamour Boys can complete their double swoop or need to explore alternative targets.
