Kaizer Chiefs stars running out of time to force Afcon call-ups

Posted on November 19, 2025

Kaizer Chiefs could make life difficult for Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos before he names his Afcon 2025 squad.

With the tournament kicking off on 21 December in Morocco, Amakhosi’s next four fixtures is an opportunity to turn up the pressure on Broos.

HUGO BROOS UNFAIRLY OVERLOOKING KAIZER CHIEFS PLAYERS?

The Soweto giants sit third on the Betway Premiership table, just three points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, and they still boast the best defensive record in the division.

Bafana fans have accused Broos of overlooking the Glamour Boys before, and the recent selections have only fuelled that feeling. The last Amakhosi star to earn a call-up was Mduduzi Shabalala in October, when he made the bench for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda but never featured.

The loudest argument, though, centres around Brandon Petersen. The 31-year-old keeper has produced nine clean sheets in 14 games across all competitions , more than any other goalkeeper in Mzansi this season.

REMAINING FIXURES

Kaizer Chiefs have four matches left in 2025, two in the CAF Confederation Cup and two in the Betway Premiership, to force Broos’ hand:

  • 23 November – Al-Masry (away)
  • 29 November – Zamalek (home)
  • 3 December – Chippa United (home)
  • 7 December – TS Galaxy (away).
