Kaizer Chiefs star reminds coach of African legend

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze believes Zitha Kwinika represents a rare mentality that every team needs.

Once viewed as a squad player on the fringes, Kwinika has forced his way into the conversation with consistency, leadership and resilience.

Kwinika’s performances toward the end of last season played a key role in Kaizer Chiefs’ Nedbank Cup success, including the final win over Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

For Kaze, Kwinika is more than just a reliable defender. He is a fighter. “Last season, I was asked which player I would bring to a war if I have to choose one, I said Zitha Kwinika,” Kaze told journalists.

ARSENAL LEGEND COMPARISON

The comparison that followed was telling. Kaze recalled a famous Arsenal story involving former Ivory Coast defender Kolo Touré , a player defined more by personality than polish when he first arrived in England.

“There’s a story, a player named Kolo Toure, he went to Arsenal for trial, first ball, he went on with two legs, almost broke the legs of Thierry Henry.

“Secondly, another play, he double tackles Dennis Bergkamp, the two best players of Arsenal.

“Everyone was convinced that this player won’t be signed because he almost broke the legs of two best players of the team.

“Arsene Wenger said, after that, ‘I’m gonna sign him because he has the personality, the character and everything else, I will teach him’, that’s Zitha Kwinika,” the Kaizer Chiefs mentor concluded.
