Kaizer Chiefs right-back Thabiso Monyane has been called to the Bafana Bafana as a replacement for Nyiko Mobbie.
The Siwelele FC defender will miss the FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria on Tuesday following an injury he suffered against Lesotho on Friday. Mobbie was subbed off in the early stages of the match and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Zuko Mdenyelwa was called in to replace the right-back.
On Saturday afternoon, Bafana Bafana announced on their social media that Kaizer Chiefs right-back Thabiso Monyane would be Mobbie’s replacement.
“Thabiso Monyane joined the Bafana Bafana camp on Saturday and immediately headed to training with his teammates at the Petrus Molemela Stadium. He replaces Nyiko Mobbie, who was injured during the FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho on Friday.”
Kaizer Chiefs star called to the national team
Bafana head coach Hugo Broos confirmed that Mobbis will not feature against Nigeria.
“It’s a pity that we have those injuries. [Thabo] Moloisane is not so bad, but Mobbie is out,” Broos told the media.
“So we’ll have to call someone else, and we will decide in the next hour who that will be. That’s the only negative point of this game. But again, that can happen in any game. But I saw a very motivated and aggressive team from Lesotho.”
Monyane is not the only Kaizer Chiefs player in the Bafana team. Mduduzi Shabalala is part of the 23-man squad but did not feature against Lesotho.
Having left Pirates in June, Monyane joined Soweto rivals Chiefs alongside Paseka Mako, who also left the Buccaneers. The talented right-back has shown good form with the Glamour Boys and has been one of their best players so far this season.
The new Kaizer Chiefs favourite has now reunited with his former Pirates teammates at Bafana.
