Kaizer Chiefs named in five-horse league race

Posted on September 20, 2025

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper William Shongwe says the 2025/26 Betway Premiership is shaping up differently.

Sekhukhune United have stood out as an early contender to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns.

Included in the race are, of course, Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, and Stellenbosch FC.

KAIZER CHIEFS AMONG FIVE TEAMS TO CHALLENGE MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

After six rounds of the Betway Premiership, Sekhukhune United lead the pack with 16 points, Mamelodi Sundowns sit second on 15, while Amakhosi trail in third with 13.

Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch, meanwhile, have endured a tougher start, both dropping points early and playing catch-up.

“As soon as [Mamelodi] Sundowns address all their issues, they will perform at a much higher level,” Shongwe said to Kick Off. “I’m pleased to see new teams like Sekhukhune making an impact. Their performance against Kaizer Chiefs was impressive.

“Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs are unpredictable and inconsistent. They’re like someone with mood swings – sometimes they play well, and other times they struggle.

“Orlando Pirates, on the other hand, are making progress and have great depth in their squad. I believe they will once again challenge Sundowns.

“There will be five teams fighting for the league title: Kaizer Chiefs, Stellenbosch FC, Sekhukhune, Orlando Pirates, and Sundowns,” Shongwe added.
