Kaizer Chiefs legend slams Matlou for mimicking Mukoko’s antics

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou has reportedly been ruled out for the remainder of the 2025/26 season after undergoing knee surgery.

The 27-year-old sustained the injury during Amakhosi’s 2-1 defeat to Zamalek SC in the CAF Confederation Cup last month.

After further medical assessments, the club’s medical team deemed surgery necessary, as per Soccer Laduma.

Matlou had only recently returned from a previous injury setback and managed just four appearances before being sidelined once again.

With his contract set to expire at the end of June, the latest setback casts fresh uncertainty over his future at Naturena.

Injury Woes Continue to Mount at Kaizer Chiefs

Matlou’s absence adds to a growing injury list at Chiefs. He is not the only Amakhosi player who’s on the sidelines.

Ahead of Tuesday’s clash against Richards Bay, experienced defender Miguel Inacio was forced out during the warm-up and replaced by Bradley Cross, a disruption that proved costly as the Glamour Boys were beaten 1-0 by Natal Rich Boys.

“I believe we were a little bit shaky in our defence,” Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze admitted.

“The injury of Miguel during the warm-up and the suspension of Zitha, you have to change the whole defence as well. I believe that mostly that cost us the game.”

Another long-term absentee remains Rushwin Dortley. The 23-year-old defender suffered a serious knee injury a year ago and has missed more than 40 official matches since.

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen is also on the treatment table. The 31-year-old shot-stopper is expected to be out for between two and three weeks, with his return likely after the upcoming FIFA international break, according to SABC Sport presenter Mazola Molefe.

With injuries piling up at a crucial stage of the campaign, Amakhosi’s squad depth will once again be tested.

Kaizer Chiefs are next in action on 15 March against Durban City.

Should Matlou get a new contract?
