Kaizer Chiefs make announcement on coach Nabi

This is far from ideal. Kaizer Chiefs are set to face Stellenbosch FC at the Athlone Stadium on Sunday, but unfortunate personal circumstances have led to a sudden change in their coaching plans just days before kick-off.

The club confirmed on Saturday that coach Nabi will not be travelling with the squad to the Western Cape.

This news comes as a significant blow to the team’s early preparations, with the opening fixture expected to set the tone for a highly anticipated season under Nabi’s leadership.

Coach Nabi, on the brink of his second season with Amakhosi, has been key in reshaping the team’s tactical approach during pre-season. His absence now places added responsibility on the shoulders of his technical staff as they aim to execute his vision in the crucial opening match.

Kaizer Chiefs released an official statement to inform supporters of the situation.

“We regret to inform our supporters that Coach Nasreddine Nabi will not be travelling with the team to Cape Town for our opening game of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season against Stellenbosch FC this Sunday. A critical accident involving his wife has occurred at his home in Tunisia, prompting the coach to travel this evening to be with her and the family.

“Coach Nabi will return to South Africa once the situation has stabilised. The coach has had discussions with the technical team to prepare for the game. In coach Nabi’s absence, first assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef and second assistant coach Cedric Kaze will be on the bench for the upcoming game.

“Kaizer Chiefs would like to extend its best wishes to Coach Nabi and his family during this challenging time. We ask all supporters to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”

The game will kick off at 17:30 on Sunday at the Athlone Stadium.
