Amakhosi’s CAF journey started after winning the Nedbank Cup final with a 2-1 victory over Orlando Pirates in May.
The first round of this campaign was a squeeze past Angola’s Kabuscorp on penalties after a 1-1 aggregate score.
In the second-round qualifiers, Kaizer Chiefs sank DR Congo’s AS Simba 4-2 on aggregate.
Coming into Group D, Egypt’s Zamalek will be the team to beat. The White Knights have won this tournament twice, in 2018/19 and 2023/24.
The last time Amakhosi made it past the qualifiers was in 2013/14 when they lost to Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosas 3-1 on aggregate in the round of 16.
MORE ON ZESCO AND AL-MASRY
The third Group D nemesis, Zesco, knocked out Kaizer Chiefs in the second round qualifiers of this competition during the 2018/19 season with a 5-2 aggregate score. The Zambian giants best effort was in 2016/17 when they lost to SuperSport United in the quarterfinals.
The group’s fourth side, Al-Masry, are no slouches. Their best run in this event was in 2017/18 when they lost to Congolese giants AS Vita in the semifinals. Last season, they lost to Fadlu David’s AS Simba on penalties in the quarterfinals.
All the teams will face each other home and away before the group winners and runners-up qualify for the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, fellow Betway Premiership side Stellenbosch FC have been placed in Group C alongside CR Belouizdad (Algeria), AS Otoho (DR Congo), and Sindinga Black Stars (Tanzania).
