Kaizer Chiefs break silence on Velebayi and Baartman situation

Kaizer Chiefs now face a legal showdown after Cape Town Spurs contested the signing of two key players who reportedly joined Amakhosi as free agents. Spurs captain Asanele Velebayi and midfielder Luke Baartman allegedly signed contracts with Chiefs soon after Spurs suffered relegation. However, Spurs insist both players remain under contract and have ordered them back to training.

AmaZulu, meanwhile, signed Liam Bern believing the player was a free agent after Spurs’ drop from the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Spurs dispute this, maintaining their contracts still hold despite relegation, further complicating matters in the local transfer scene.

Legal action and upcoming hearings set the stage

Cape Town Spurs have initiated legal proceedings against the players, who are eager to join the Soweto giants. The Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) will hold virtual hearings this week, where Spurs, the players, and their representatives will present their cases before a final ruling.

Motaung confirms Chiefs’ professional approach

Kaizer Chiefs Marketing and Commercial Director Jessica Motaung emphasised the club’s commitment to following proper procedures. She told journalists, “I think what’s important is that we are in the business of doing things in a way that’s not going to interfere with other clubs.”

Motaung stressed that Chiefs “can’t be engaging players who are still with teams or are still contracted.” She reassured fans that the club is “taking a very professional approach to integrating and bringing players into the team” and will “only make announcements when the time is right.”

The club awaits the outcome of the legal process before making any official statements regarding the players’ futures.

Will Kaizer Chiefs win the case against Spurs?
