Kaizer Chiefs’ biggest opportunity in 11 years

Posted on February 20, 2026

Kaizer Chiefs may still be reeling from Carling Knockout, Nedbank and CAF Confederation Cup failures. Still, they find themselves with a big opportunity to win the Betway Premiership title, for the first time since 2014/15.

Amakhosi are currently fourth on 30 points, eight points behind log leaders Orlando Pirates, who sit on 38, and five points behind second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns on 35.

CAN KAIZER CHIEFS SNATCH THE LEAGUE TITLE?

Amakhosi also have two games in hand on Orlando Pirates and one on Mamelodi Sundowns, which means the race is tighter than it appears.

What makes this situation even more significant is the fixture list that lies ahead. Kaizer Chiefs will face twice in the Soweto Derby, home and away, on 28 February and 25 April, before taking on Mamelodi Sundowns on 5 May.

Those are not just ordinary matches in the Betway Premiership calendar, they are confrontations with the two teams currently standing in their way.

RESULTS AGAINST ORLANDO PIRATES AND MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

If Amakhosi were to collect maximum points in those fixtures, especially in the two derbies, the impact on the standings would be dramatic.

Beating Orlando Pirates twice would not only add six points to Kaizer Chiefs’ total but also prevent their rivals from extending their lead, while a victory over Mamelodi Sundowns would tighten the gap even further and shift momentum at the top.

In the meantime, Stellenbosch FC are visiting the FNB Stadium next Tuesday at 19:30.
