Interested in Becoming Bafana Next Coach? Hunt Responds

Posted on October 31, 2025

With Hugo Broos stepping down next year, Durban City head coach Gavin Hunt feels he is now at the ideal age to take over the Bafana Bafana coaching job.

Since taking the SA national team reins in May 2021, Hugo Broos has led Bafana Bafana to significant success, including qualification for two AFCONs and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as well as securing the bronze medal at the most recent AFCON tournament.

He has not made it a secret that he plans to step down and return to Belgium following the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

During his chat with Sky Tshabalala on the SmashSports Podcast, Hunt expressed his interest in spearheading the national team should the opportunity come his way.

He also revealed that he has previously been interviewed for the Bafana coaching position on two separate occasions.

“Yeah, I’m at the right age now,” answered Hunt.

“So, in 2010 I went to the interview, we sat in the room there with people interviewing me. Obviously, they gave it to [Alberto] Parreira.

“And in 2014, 2015, I went again for another interview. So, it was sort of ‘Okay, it’s not gonna happen’. Hugo has come in and done a brilliant job.

“And I’ve always said that a national team should be managed by an older person. He’s got a lot of experience; he knows how to accept situations.

“For me, the national team coach is the selector. You have two or three days, pulling them in, you don’t have time. I’ve also always said that the national team should be managed by the own nationality, and this is no inspection of Hugo or something.”
