Inside Kaizer Chiefs: Life after Maart leadership

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has lifted the lid on how the club’s leadership structure has changed since the departure of former captain Yusuf Maart.

Maart, who famously became the first Amakhosi skipper in a decade to lift silverware, scoring the winning goal in the Nedbank Cup final against Orlando Pirates, left Naturena at the end of last season.

The 31-year-old’s exit has left a big gap, but Petersen believes Kaizer Chiefs still have strong voices to carry the team forward.

“I think there are quite a few leaders in the team. I mean, guys lead in different ways, some lead by example, some lead by word of mouth,” Petersen said.

“So, I think we have quite a few different characters, different leaders in the group. I think Yusuf was a great leader. He’s been with the team for a while, and he has a good relationship with some, with most of the players.

“So, I think with him going, I mean, it’s a good move for him you always want to see your fellow teammates and players, taking that next step in their careers.

“So, I think it’s a good move for him in terms of leadership in the team. I mean, Miguel is a natural leader. And I think he leads by action. You can see the way he plays, the way he conducts himself, and there are a lot of guys that look up to him in terms of it.

“So, I think within the team we have, we have quite a few good, solid leaders. And I think the important thing is for us as leaders, to come together and just try and stay focused, and guide the younger ones, and, when we see that things are not going the way they’re supposed to go, it’s for us to put our brands and try and realign everything,” Petersen concluded.
