‘I will not apologise to Kaizer Chiefs supporters’ – Maluleka

Posted on December 24, 2025

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Maluleka insists he will not apologise for leaving Amakhosi for Mamelodi Sundowns in 2020.

The former Ajax Cape Town star was a fan favourite at Chiefs, but shocked many when he left the club for bitter rivals Sundowns. The timing raised eyebrows, given Amakhosi were top of the log at the time.

Speaking to Robert Marawa on MSW, Maluleka said a lot of things happened behind the scenes which forced him to leave Kaizer Chiefs.

“There’s no need for an apology, to be honest. This was unfortunate and it happened. I don’t wanna say it was supposed to happen that way, but that year, we were supposed to win the league as Kaizer Chiefs since I was there,” said the ex-Downs midfielder.

“I left, and it didn’t happen, and a lot of people said it was because of me, which is fine, I also understand.”

Maluleka left Chiefs for Sundowns

Speaking on Behind the Boot with SuperJourno podcast, the ex-Chiefs star admitted there were complications which forced him to jump ship and join Sundowns after half a decade with the Soweto giants.

“There were too many things that happened at that time. There were too many complications, even in the boardroom. Bobby [Motaung] is getting sick, he had a small operation to do,” Maluleka said.

“Time was running out, it was March, and now there is COVID-19. There are so many dynamics that a lot of people don’t understand about that whole move.”

Maluleka maintains he did not betray Chiefs as Sundowns came with an offer while his contract was set to expire at Naturena. His stay with Masandawana lasted just two years before he joined KZN side AmaZulu.

Did Maluleka destroy his career by leaving Amakhosi?
