I wasn’t really close to joining Chiefs, says new Sundowns star

Posted on August 7, 2025

Newly-signed Mamelodi Sundowns star Fawaaz Basadien has revealed that he was never close to joining Kaizer Chiefs.

Basadien was a top performer for Stellenbosch FC last season, and speculation around his future was rife.

Chiefs were, at some point, reported to be closing in on Basadien but the Bafana Bafana defender has stated otherwise.

Basadien was speaking to Robert Marawa on MSW on 947 where he revealed that he always wanted to join Sundowns.

Nonetheless, the left-footed player admitted that there were behind-the-scene talks for him to move to Chiefs but nothing came out of those.

NEW SUNDOWNS STAR BASADIEN NEVER WANTED TO JOIN CHIEFS

“It wasn’t really close, to be honest. It wasn’t really close,” revealed Basadien.

“There was, obviously, a lot of interest, talks and everything but my main focus… my main decision was to join Sundowns.

“So, that was my main.”
