Former Orlando Pirates head coach Owen da Gama has made himself available for the Kaizer Chiefs coaching job.
Currently, Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze are serving as co-coaches until the end of the season at Amakhosi. Having taken over from Nasreddine Nabi in October, the two coaches’s mandate was to finish in the top two this season in order to retain their jobs.
Da Gama has not coached in the PSL for half a decade but if given a chance, he would take the Chiegs coaching job in a heartbeat.
“I am saying Kaizer Chiefs. Chiefs are the club I want. If I can get Chiefs just for a season only,” he said as per FARPost.
“It’s on my bucket list if the opportunity arises. If only I could get Chiefs, I could tell you. I don’t want to overhype myself, but it’s on my bucket list. But I wouldn’t mind any other team,” he added.
“I learnt a lot from Dr Irvin Khoza, and I am still grateful that I was given the opportunity to work at Orlando Pirates. That opportunity put me on the map, let’s be honest,” Da Gama added.
Da Gama eyeing Kaizer Chiefs job
Although the former Pirates mentor has not coached in the PSL for some time, but has praised PSL chairman Irvin Khoza for raising the standards.
“The PSL is a big brand. What Dr Khoza did for football in this country is big. The PSL is one of the biggest leagues in Africa. So I think the standard of football in the country has grown tremendously,” Da Gama concluded.
It remains to be seen if Kaizer Chiefs will shortlist Owen Da Gama for next season.
