‘I can’t count Kaizer Chiefs’ – Khanye backs Sundowns, Pirates for title

Posted on January 29, 2026

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has played down Amakhosi’s chances of winning the Betway Premiership this season.

The Soweto giants edged Marumo Gallants 1-0 on Wednesday night to climb to second place on the log, closing the gap on leaders Mamelodi Sundowns to just two points.

Chiefs have now recorded three consecutive wins across all competitions and appear to be rediscovering their form in 2026. However, Khanye remains unconvinced by their recent performances.

Speaking on iDiski TV, the outspoken analyst argued that Amakhosi have been grinding out results rather than producing convincing displays.

Kaizer Chiefs climb to second on the log

“Going into the game, I honestly think it deserved a draw. There was nothing special from both teams,” Khanye said.

“Kaizer Chiefs lack creativity and it took a moment of brilliance to separate the two teams. Yes, they won, but honestly, they were poor. They lacked combination play, which we saw from Gallants. Gallants combined well but couldn’t hurt Chiefs.

“Well done to Kaizer Chiefs, but it was a boring game.”

Khanye also dismissed Chiefs as genuine title contenders, insisting that Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates remain the frontrunners for the league crown.

“Mina, I can’t count Kaizer Chiefs as title contenders. There’s still a lot of work to be done. I always say the way you win determines your future,” he added.

The former winger predicted that Sundowns and Pirates will finish in the top two at the end of the season.

“I still believe Sundowns will win the league because of their experience, not because they have the best team this season. Pirates are the best team, but they lack the experience to win the league.

“Chiefs will probably finish in the top five this season as they have already accumulated points.”

Kaizer Chiefs are in action this weekend against Zesco United in the CAF Confederation Cup.
