Hunt confirms failed bid for former Orlando Pirates striker

Durban City head coach Gavin Hunt has confirmed that he did approach former Orlando Pirates striker Zakhele Lepasa for his services.

The 28-year-old Bafana Bafana forward worked under the 60-year-old coach during a six-month loan at SuperSport United, where he rediscovered his form. Lepasa was recalled by Pirates and also represented Bafana Bafana, where he helped them qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Unfortunately, injuries halted his progress, and he missed out on the tournament, which took place in early 2024. Last season, he failed to make a single appearance for the Buccaneers due to an injury, and ultimately, he was offloaded by the club.

Hunt, who joined Durban City last month, said the former Orlando Pirates star did not accept his offer. The lanky striker has been linked to several teams in recent weeks including Kaizer Chiefs.

“Yeah, it’s someone we approached, but obviously… I think he has other ideas, the boy… so we haven’t heard from him, so we [probably] have to move on, it’s one of those things,” the former SuperSport United mentor told iDiski Times.

Since leaving Pirates, Lepasa has been training with Bafana Bafana ahead of the CHAN tournament. South Africa plays Algeria in their opening match at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala.

Which team should Lepasa join?
