How We Selected Penalty Takers – Ouaddou

Posted on October 26, 2025

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained the process of selecting penalty kickers for their second round preliminary CAF Champions League second leg match against St Eloi Lupopo.

Pirates who came into the game trailing 3-0 from the first leg in DR Congo last week, won the second leg encounter 3-0 in regulation time in Orlando on Saturday to drag the tie to a shoot-out however crashed out as Deon Hotto and Yanela Mbuthuma missed their kicks while Tshegofatso Mabasa was on the bench.

Ouaddou said his side practiced the kicks during the week knowing there’d be a possibility of a shootout and admitted he should have brought on Mabasa for the kicks but had to stick to his original plan.

“During the week, we work the penalties with the players because it’s maybe a possibility to play the penalties if you score three goals,” said Ouaddou.

“So, we defined the list regarding all the players who’ve been successful during the past weeks, and we have a list of the guys. And when I told you that, maybe we could have been more strategic bringing just before the end of the game, bringing Mabasa, because he’s a very good kicker of penalty but we have a list.

“We have a list of the players.”
