How Orlando Pirates can beat Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus

Posted on October 31, 2025

Orlando Pirates have not won at Loftus Versfeld since 2018, and Saturday presents them with an opportunity to change that.

The Buccaneers have struggled to defeat Mamelodi Sundowns in the league but have enjoyed more success against them in cup competitions.

In fact, Pirates have beaten Sundowns in their last four cup meetings. In the league, the story has been different. Sundowns dominated until the past two seasons, when both teams became more evenly matched.

Last season, Pirates and Sundowns each secured victories over the other in the league, but it was the Buccaneers who had the last laugh, winning 2-1 at FNB Stadium.

In August, the two teams faced each other twice in the MTN8 two-legged semi-finals, with both matches ending in 1-1 draws. Ultimately, it was the Buccaneers who advanced to the final after winning a penalty shootout.

Round three awaits fans this weekend, with both teams looking to make a statement. Three points could be the difference if the title race goes down to the last day.

Can Pirates get a historic win over Sundowns?

For Pirates to beat Sundowns at home, they will need to dominate the midfield and prevent the Brazilians from playing their game.

Pirates excel on the wings, and with Oswin Appollis and Tshepang Moremi in great form, they can force the Sundowns wingbacks to play deeper, which could create an advantage for the Buccaneers.

If Thalente Mbatha, Sipho Mbule, and Masindi Nemtajela can dominate and stifle their rivals in the midfield, then the job will be largely done.

Up front, Pirates should start with Evidence Makgopa to keep the Sundowns defence occupied. Ngwana Sesi has recently found his scoring form and will be feeling confident heading into Saturday’s match.

Mamelodi Sundowns will host Orlando Pirates at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is set for 15:30, and the match will be broadcast on SABC 1 and SuperSport channels.
