Inside Kaizer Chiefs: Life after Maart leadership
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Kaizer Chiefs’ former skipper Yusuf Maart has only been gone two months, but fresh details about his transfer to SC Ried in Austria have now surfaced, and they might leave some Amakhosi fans shaking their heads.

The 31-year-old midfielder, who made history by lifting the Nedbank Cup in May after scoring the winner against Orlando Pirates, left Naturena despite having recently extended his contract by another two years.

With a month before the start of the new season, Kaizer Chiefs sealed a deal with Ried rather smoothly, but Maart’s former side Sekhukhune United were watching closely…

Revealed: Orlando Pirates legend spoke to Sipho Mbule

According to FARPost, Maart’s move to Amakhosi included a sell-on clause favouring Sekhukhune. The sale of Maart to Ried was R2.6 million, of which 20% is due to Babina Noko.

“Just two months after the move was completed, the transfer fee has emerged. Amakhosi, who paid in the region of R6 million from Babina Noko in June 2022, reportedly received a fee of €130 000. Converted to the South African rand, the fee is about R2.6 million,” Mthokozisi Dube reported.

“When Chiefs bought the midfielder from Sekhukhune, there was an agreement that they would give them a 20% share should they sell him in future. That means Chiefs are obligated to pay a fee of €26 000 [R530,000] to his former club.

“Reports are that the two clubs could be headed for a legal battle over the unpaid sell-on clause,” Dube concluded.
