Evidence Makgopa has quietly emerged as an unsung hero for Orlando Pirates this season.
The 25-year-old striker endured a difficult start to the campaign, struggling to find the back of the net for the Buccaneers.
His lack of goals eventually saw him lose his place in the starting line-up to new signing Yanela Mbuthuma.
The start of 2026, however, marked a turning point for Makgopa. The lanky forward scored for Bafana Bafana in their Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 clash against Cameroon.
That goal, along with his improved performances for Pirates thereafter, helped restore confidence in him among the club’s supporters.
Makgopa not a starter at Pirates
At the time, Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou still preferred Mbuthuma as his starting striker. But following defeats to Mamelodi Sundowns and Casric Stars, fans began calling for the return of Makgopa, affectionately known as “Ngwana Sesi”.
During the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs, Makgopa was introduced in the second half and received a thunderous reception from the Pirates crowd.
He wasted little time making an impact, scoring his third goal in three consecutive Soweto derbies.
The forward could also have registered an assist in the match, but a well-timed pass was squandered by his captain, Nkosinathi Sibisi.
Makgopa has earned praise for his tireless work rate, selflessness and relentless energy on the pitch. While his tally of 21 goals in 94 appearances across all competitions for Pirates may not appear prolific, his commitment and willingness to fight for the team have endeared him to the Buccaneers faithful.
His impressive scoring record in the Soweto Derby is likely to earn him even more admiration from supporters in the weeks ahead.
He may not always be the most clinical finisher, but Evidence Makgopa has consistently shown heart whenever he wears the Orlando Pirates badge and fans are beginning to recognise and appreciate that.
