How Kaizer Chiefs went silent on forgotten Bafana Bafana star

Posted on September 4, 2025

Forgotten Bafana Bafana star Lebogang Phiri has confirmed that there were talks between his camp and Kaizer Chiefs.

Phiri is currently a free agent after parting ways with French Ligue 2 side EA Guingamp.

This was after the expiry of his short-term contract with them, and he was willing to return home and play for Chiefs.

The 30-year-old told Andile Ncube on Metro FM on Thursday that he was actually holding out for a move to Chiefs.

Phiri revealed that he even went to the Village in Naturena to negotiate with Chiefs and his agent tabled an offer.

However, Chiefs never came back to him and his agency as they waited for their response on the tabled offer.

Chiefs have since signed Lebohang Maboe to bolster their midfield, and Phiri’s dream of donning the gold and black jersey appears to have vanished into thin air.

“I went to the Village, and everyone seemed excited. I was holding out for Chiefs,” he said.

“But they never came back to me. My agent did table an offer he felt we were worth.”
