Hlungwani Explains Why VAR Denied Banyana Extra-Time Penalty

Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani has applauded VAR for rightfully overturning a penalty decision for South Africa in their quarter-final clash against Senegal.

Banyana Banyana striker Hildah Magaia went down inside the 18-yard area from what seemed like a vicious tackle from behind but upon consultation, the penalty was chalked off.

Speaking on SABC 1’s Soccerzone, Hlungwani argued that even though it seemed as if the South African forward was tackled, replay proved that there was indeed a collision between the two players.

“Who has the ball there? No one has the ball. Anyone can play that ball,” he said.

“No one has control. The ball is within playing distance. Anyone has the right to challenge that ball.

“This was not even a tackle [from Senegal defender]. The one is kicking, and the other one is kicking, so they collide.

“No one has control of the ball, so who do we protect? You can’t protect anyone.

“So here, correct decision by VAR to take out that penalty.”

The defending WAFCON champions eventually sealed a 4-1 penalty shootout victory to set up a semi-final clash against fierce rivals Nigeria.
