‘He wanted to be my father’ – Jali reveals clash with Rulani

Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Andile Jali has opened up about his complicated relationship with former coach Rulani Mokwena.

The 35-year-old, who has since retired, revealed why his relationship with Mokwena deteriorated during their time at Sundowns.

After Mokwena took over as head coach in 2022, Jali found himself sidelined for much of the following season before eventually leaving Chloorkop in 2023.

Speaking on Arena Sports Show, Jali said he was uncomfortable with what he perceived as Rulani’s overly personal approach.

“We had our issues. We had fun at times, but in the end, it wasn’t the same because he wanted to be like a father to me,” Jali said.

“You can’t be a father to me. I have kids, I have a family, I have a wife. I came here to work—you can’t be my father and tell me what to do. I know what to do and what not to do.”

In contrast, Jali spoke fondly about working under former Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane, despite describing their relationship as unpredictable.

Jali preferred Pitso than Rulani

“Yoh, it was nice,” Jali said on working with Jingles.

“Pitso is the coach who today might not like you, but tomorrow he wakes up and wants to play you. He’ll catch you off guard, tell you you’re not starting, but on matchday you’re in the starting eleven.”

Jali added that while his relationship with Mosimane could be complex, it ultimately kept him motivated, as he never knew when he would be called upon.

Under Rulani Mokwena, Jali was not featured much and ultimately left the club to join Moroka Swallows. In his first match against his former side, the ex-Pirates star was given a red card for a challenge on Bongani Zungu.

The match created headlines as tension between Jali, Sundowns and Mokwena flared up.

Do you think Rulani can manage senior players?
