‘He didn’t look like himself’: Ex-Chiefs star on Mbule

Posted on December 25, 2025

Former Kaizer Chiefs attacker Junior Khanye felt Sipho Mbule went ‘missing’ during Bafana Bafana’s opener againt Angola in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Bafana beat Angola 2-1, thanks to goals from Oswin Appollis and Lyle Foster on Monday in Morocco.

“We had expectations on certain players, especially Sipho Mbule, Mohau Nkota and Oswin Appollis,” said Khanye on iDiski TV.

Sipho Mbule did not set Afcon alight for Bafana

Khanye questioned Bafana‘s performance despite their win over Angola. The former winger felt some of the combinations did not work on Monday evening.

“I know Appollis scored, but when you check his overall performance, I don’t think he did much. It was difficult to see Mbule in this game because there was no link,” he said.

“Certain positions in the game I think exposed the coach. Number one I don’t think there’s a combination between [Mbkezeli] Mbokazi and [Siyabonga] Ngezana. I don’t think there is a combination between [Sphephelo Sithole] Yaya and [Teboho] Mokoena and also Sipho Mbule and Lyle Foster I think there’s questions there.”

Mbule has been on form for Bafana before the AFCON, but against Angola, he didn’t have the best of matches.

“If there are no links there is no way we can dominate a game there is no way you can say I will win the game. Sipho Mbule played in moments, especially first half, I didn’t see him.

“He [Mbule] lost so much possession especially in Bafana Bafana’s half. He didn’t look like himself, always receiving the ball while facing our goal I don’t understand why,” Khanye added.

Will Mbule discover his form?
