Gavin Hunt off to a winning start but will Orlando Pirates recall Mabasa?

Posted on January 21, 2026

Gavin Hunt’s tenure as Stellenbosch FC head coach got off to a winning start thanks to Tshegofatso Mabasa’s goal.

The 29-year-old talented striker scored the only goal of the match to lift the Cape side to 13th on the table.

Three points away from home sees Gavin Hunt’s side out of the relegation battle for now. The team will now turn their focus to the CAF Confederations Cup this weekend.

“The problem is that when players come from these clubs, they haven’t trained. They said they trained, but they have big squads, so they train on the sides like Mabasa, Lebusa and KK (Kodisang),” Hunt told the media after the match.

“I got CAF (Confederation Cup) now to try and play them fit for the league and for them to be fit.

“I have to try and make the squad better and improve the players and the results; it’s my job. That’s going to be an ongoing fight.”

Mabasa gives Hunt all three points

“We are in a situation where we’ve got to try and make the squad better; improve the players and improve the results. It is an ongoing fight but we are at the halfway point of the campaign with another half to go,” Hunt said

“We know where our shortcomings are. We’ve got some good players in the dressing room. They just need a different type of mentality and it takes time to get that into the team.”

With Mabasa scoring on debut for Stellenbosch, it remains to be seen if Hunt will turn his loan deal permanent. If Orlando Pirates fail to find goals, they might recall the striker like they did before.
