Kaizer Chiefs lost 2-1 to Stellenbosch FC in the Betway Premiership on a damp evening at the FNB Stadium in Nasrec on Tuesday.
It was a match in which Amakhosi led comfortably at half-time and controlled for the majority of the 90-plus minutes.
Flavio Da Silva had given Kaizer Chiefs the lead after the first half after an instinctive finish nine minutes before the break.
However, Stellenbosch FC equalised in the 51st minute through Langelihle Phili and grabbed all three points through Devin Titus’ winner in the 87th minute.
Soweto derby up next
The result kept Amakhosi in fourth place in the table, on 30 points from 16 matches, and with a huge Soweto derby fixture to come on the weekend.
Meanwhile, Stellenbosch FC, coached by former Kaizer Chiefs boss Gavin Hunt, eased their relegation worries with the three points.
Stellies moved to 11th place in the standings with 19 points after 17 matches.
Hunt also oversaw Stellenbosch’s 2-1 Nedbank Cup elimination of Kaizer Chiefs in early February.
This latest league result will give the Glamour Boys extra motivation heading into the much-anticipated Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates on Saturday, 28 February, also at FNB Stadium.
Kick-off is at 15:30.
