Orlando Pirates have another opportunity to get away from Mamelodi Sundowns as the battle for the Premier Soccer League title continues.

The Soweto giants already defeated Richards Bay 1–0 in the Carling Knockout semi-final on 8 November.

Going into Wednesday, Orlando Pirates are enjoying a strong run of form. The Sea Robbers most recently securing a hard-fought 2–1 victory away against Polokwane City.

Relebohile Mofokeng found the opener before Patrick Maswanganyi stole a late winner in the 89th minute.

ORLANDO PIRATES IN CONTROL

It came just after the emphatic 3–0 victory over arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto derby on 28 February. Tshepang Moremi, Oswin Appollis and Evidence Makgopa all found the net in a dominant performance that once again showed the attacking quality within Abeslam Ouaddou’s squad.

With 44 points from 19 matches and a healthy goal difference, Orlando Pirates remain firmly in control of their destiny in the Betway Premiership.

Their domestic dominance was also confirmed early in the season. Orlando Pirates lifted their third consecutive MTN8 trophy after defeating Stellenbosch FC in a dramatic final.

Although Orlando Pirates suffered a narrow 2–1 defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns earlier in the month, they bounced back well.

Much of the Buccaneers’ success has come from the balance between defence and attack.

Despite their strong domestic form, the season has not been without challenges. Orlando Pirates endured disappointment on the continent after exiting the CAF Champions League during the group stages.

Looking ahead, the Sea Robbers are entering a crucial phase of the season with several home fixtures at the Orlando Amstel Arena. Their next test comes against Richards Bay FC on Wednesday, 11 March, before another fixture quickly follows against Siwelele FC.
