Former SA footballer lifts lid on Thabo Cele’s Chiefs exile

Posted on December 15, 2025

Former South African footballer has revealed the main reason why Thabo Cele has not featured much this season for Kaizer Chiefs.

The 28-year-old central midfielder was not available in Amakhosi’s last two matches of 2025, which raised questions. With Sibongiseni Mthethwa injured, many fans felt Cele could slot in and add more leadership and experience in the middle.

The player has not featured much compared to his first season at Chiefs were he was their best player since joining in the second half of the campaign.

Speaking to Brain Baloyi on SoccerBeat, Du Toit said Cele is being left out in the cold for questioning Kaizer Chiefs coaches’ tactics.

“The reason Thabo Cele is not playing is that the coaches don’t like the fact that the player questions their tactics, the training sessions and in particular his role in the team,” he said.

“This happens all the time, even overseas. Players question what they do at training, and what the benefits are.”

“This shouldn’t be punishable. Whether it’s overtly, it’s wrong.

Cele sidelined by Kaizer Chiefs

Baloyi also felt that the Chiefs coaches were harsh on the midfielder given his experience and willingness to learn.

“When you’re questioning things, it’s not because you are being disrespectful but you’re questioning because you want the best for the players, but for the club and you want the best for yourself as well. You are trying to understand how the coaches want you to function in this team,” the Chiefs legend said.

He said Cele playing in Europe could have been the reason he has questioned Chiefs co-coaches.

“As a coach, if you are going to want players just to take in and there’s feedback, or engagement, then you just have lambs waiting to be slaughtered. You don’t have soldiers on the field who can fight for you,” Baloyi added.

“Thabo, having played in Europe, has had a lot of coaches, different styles and he learned not just to take things without questioning. You should never be crucified for asking questions in a manner which is not disrespectful.”

Cele has been used more in the CAF Confederation Cup where Kaizer Chiefs are currently competing.

Should Cele be questioning the coaches?
