Former Kaizer Chiefs coach returns to first team dugout

Remember Dillon Sheppard? The 47-year-old who previously co-coached Kaizer Chiefs with Arthur Zwane, is back at Naturena and working with the first team again.

Let’s find out exactly why he is back – and what his plans are for Amakhosi.

Technical team member

Sheppard has returned to the Kaizer Chiefs first team where he will be utilised as an additional technical team member.

Current Glamour Boys co-coach Cedric Kaze commented on Sheppard’s return to the first team.

“We have brought an extra member in the technical staff [Sheppard] with the experience. I would say that at training we do a lot of exercises to finish a lot of situations that could arise into the game,” Kaze told the media.

This confirms Sheppard’s return as part of the club’s effort to improve its performances.

Currently, Kaizer Chiefs lie fifth in the standings with 33 points from 19 matches.

However, they have two games in hand over both fourth-placed AmaZulu FC and third-placed Sekhukhune United, who both have 34 points from 21 matches.

If Amakhosi win their games in hand they can climb to thrid in the Betway Premiership.

Poor run of results

As mentioned, Sheppard has been brought in to improve the team’s performances following a poor recent run under co-coaches Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef.

Kaizer Chiefs were knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup in the group stages and were also eliminated from the Nedbank Cup by Stellenbosch FC in the Round of 32.

They lost three Betway Premiership matches in a row, effectively ending their title ambitions. This included a 3-0 defeat to arch rivals Orlando Pirates.

They ended their losing streak with a 1-0 win over Durban City last Sunday at FNB Stadium.

Now, with Sheppard assisting the technical team, Kaizer Chiefs will aim to finish third to secure qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup next season.

This will require consistent results – and several wins – over the final stretch of the campaign.

In what position in the standings will Kaizer Chiefs end the season?
