Former coach warns Kaizer Chiefs boss on January signings

Posted on January 8, 2026

Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs have been encouraged to think twice about signing players in the current January transfer window.

Despite close rivals Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns getting further away from Amakhosi, Muhsin Ertugral believes new faces could negatively affect the existing squad.

Following the transfer window’s opening on the 1st of this month, Pirates have signed Andre De Jong from Stellenbosch FC, while Sundowns have reportedly signed the Colombian striker Brayan Leon.

AMAKHOSI ADVISED TO PASS ON THE JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW

Amakhosi launched a major rebuild at the start of the season. They signed 11 new players in the previous transfer window in June after finishing in ninth place last term.

The list of new players included Thabiso Monyane, Paseka Mako, Nkanyiso Shinga, Flavio Silva, Lebohang Maboe, Siphesihle Ndlovu, Asanele Velebayi, Luke Baartman, Khanyisa Mayo, Etiosa Ighodaro and Ethan Chislett.

The overhaul has led to debate around Kaizer Chiefs’ next steps in the current transfer window.

Former Amakhosi coach Muhsin Ertugral offered his perspective based on his time at Naturena, saying new faces may have a negative effect on the recently added players.

“I think [Kaizer] Junior is busy with a lot of elements but, the biggest problem for me was always, when I was there, the January transfer window never helps a lot,” he said on the OmniAudioAfrica podcast.

“They need to be careful of that. Bringing in a lot of players now, it does not make sense. It means you don’t trust the players.

“Sometimes the players will take that very seriously. They need to have a nice feeling,” the Turkish-German coach added.

In the meantime, the window closes on the 31st, with the Glamour Boys linked with Bafana Bafana midfielder Sphephelo Sithole.
