Forgotten Orlando Pirates fan favourite makes long-awaited return

Posted on December 17, 2025

Orlando Pirates fans could not hide their joy when they witnessed the return of Thabiso Sesane this past weekend.

The 25-year-old defender was sidelined for nearly 10 months and had to sit from the stands and watch his team lift two trophies this season.

Sesane is a Pirates youth product and was loaned out several times before he made his debut for the senior team in 2024. He immediately made an impact and won the MTN8 in October last year after a controversial 3-1 win over Stellenbosch FC.

He suffered a ruptured tendon against Sekhukhune earlier this year and required surgery, thus ruling him out of the 2024/25 season. With Jose Riveiro gone, it was always going to be difficult for Sesane to return to the starting lineup.

The promotion of Mbekezeli Mbokazi was seen as Sesane’s replacement and this season, new coach Adeslam Ouaddou introduced Lebone Seema, meaning any chances of the 25-year-old defender making a comeback were slim.

Mbokazi’s departure opens a door in the Orlando Pirates backline

After just nine months playing for Pirates’ first team, Mbokazi left to join MLS side Chicago Fire. The 20-year-old defender has left a big void which will be hard to fill.

Sesane has a chance to fight for his place back in the team.

During the Carling Black Label Cup against All Stars, the 25-year-old started his first match for Orlando Pirates in February. He kept a clean sheet while playing alongside Olisa Ndah, who was also affected by injuries over the years.

Will Sesane play more this season?
