Ex-Bafana star warns Saleng against joining Chiefs

Posted on October 21, 2025

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Thuso Phala has weighed in on the possibilities of Orbit College winger Monnapule Saleng joining Amakhosi.

The 27-year-old talented attacker is onloan from Orlando Pirates but could be available next season should the Buccaneers decide not to retain him.

Phala said if Saleng joins Chiefs, he should maintain discipline and humility in order to succed at Naturena.

“He’s a quality player and at Kaizer Chiefs, we want quality players,” Phala told Soccer Laduma.

“But the unfortunate part is that quality alone is not enough at Chiefs. In football, no one is bigger than the game or the team.”

The former Chiefs winger suggested that Saleng’s attitude and professionalism would determine whether he succeeds at Naturena, referencing the player’s absence from Orlando Pirates’ setup.

Despite being a main player for Pirates in the past, the winger was sidelined last year in Decemeber and has since not kicked the ball for the Buccaneers. His loan spell at Orbit has saw glimpses of his brilliance this season.

Phala on what Saleng should do to succed if he joins Chiefs

“There were a lot of stories but at the end of the day, respect the game,” the former Bafana Bafana winger on why Saleng was sidelined at Pirates

“If he comes to Chiefs, will it be because he (Saleng) respects the game, or because he just wants to shine? The team always comes first,” Phala added.

If Saleng joins Chiefs, he would have become the fourth former Pirates player to join Amakhosi in less two years.

Which team should Saleng play for next season?
