Kaizer Chiefs striker Wandile Duba has made a confident claim regarding the striking position in the team following the arrivals of new signings.
Last season, Duba was a key man for Amakhosi up front, scoring five goals in 25 appearances. One of his goals was a crucial one against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup semi-final, helping Chiefs win 2-1 and secure a spot in the final.
This season, he has yet to find the back of the net in four Betway Premiership matches he’s played, all of which he started.
Duba asserted that his performances from the previous season showed he has what it takes to become Nasreddine Nabi’s primary striker.
“I think last season I did show that I’m ready for anything and willing to be Kaizer Chiefs number one striker,” said Duba.
“I’m happy now that there’s [Etiosa Ighodaro] and Flavio [Silva] that I will learn from because they have been there.
“They always coach me at training. I’m ready to be number one.”
When asked if the arrivals of established strikers like Flavio Silva and Etiosa Ighodaro would create stiff competition in the position, he acknowledged they are pushing him to work hard but confidently stated that it won’t make much difference.
“Even last season with other strikers, they were pushing me to work hard and be the number one,” he added.
“So, I don’t think with them arriving, it will change a lot. I will still train hard and if I have to play, then I’ll be number one.”
