Doc – These Two Pirates Stars Are Similar To Me

Posted on January 8, 2026

Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo has identified two Orlando Pirates players that he reckons are similar to him.

Khumalo was part of the infamous 1996 Bafana squad that won the continental title on home soil and since then, South Africa has only managed to reach the semis once, in 1998, and made a slight improvement reaching the semis in 2023.

’16V’ as he is famously known, is regarded as one of the best talents to have emerged from Mzansi and speaking to Algerian journalists on AfricaFiveSide, Khumalo named two players that are similar to him when it comes to style play which are Relebohile Mofokeng and Sipho Mbule.

He also touched on how Mofokeng should’ve been used against Cameroon in the AFCON last 16 loss which is more similar to how he was used by the coach in Bafana during his playing days.

“Yeah, there are two players Mbule and Mofokeng,” Khumalo told AfricaFiveSide.

“A Mofokeng that played against Cameroon, I thought he should’ve been protected like I use to play and be given ample time to be himself, don’t restrict, don’t direct.

“The remote control lose it just let him play the game, give him the space and Mbule very clever player because Mofokeng obvious the physic he is very tiny but Mbule very strong boy. I think maybe he was the answer into the Cameroon game.”
