Chiefs Update On Baartman, Velebayi And ‘Leaked Video’

Kaizer Chiefs are taking a professional approach on the transfer saga of Luke Baartman and Asanele Velebayi, and all other impending deals, according to Marketing and Commercial Director, Jessica Motaung.

Chiefs have agreed a deal in principle for the promising duo from Cape Town Spurs, with both likely to be available as free agents, pending the Premier Soccer League Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) hearing on Monday.

Spurs argue the players, which includes Liam Bern, who has agreed to join AmaZulu, remained contracted to the club after their relegation to the ABC Motsepe League, which falls out of the jurisdiction of the PSL and thus amateur status.

But the likely outcome, as previously reported by iDiski Times, is their players will receive their clearances upon their request to the league and the South African Football Association (SAFA), paving the way for their moves to Amakhosi and Usuthu.

“I think what’s important is that we’re in the business of doing things that won’t interfere with other clubs, we want to follow certain procedures and that relates to any other player we’re looking at,” Motaung said.

“So, we’re taking a very professional approach in terms of integrating and bringing the players into the team, so we will make sure we only make announcements, when the time is right – so watch this space.

“But certainly, we can’t be engaging on players who are still with teams or still contracted, once there are any changes we will make those announcements. There’s a process, it needs to be followed, once it’s done, we will make announcements.”

The DRC hearing is set to begin today at 17h00.

The club are also in the process of securing Etiosa Ighodaro, the Mamelodi Sundowns striker, who spent the last few seasons out on loan at AmaTuks, Chippa United, SuperSport United and AmaZulu.

A video and images were leaked this weekend of the player unveiled by the club but Motaung said they are in no position to comment on what transpired; “I can’t speak to anything right now until the club makes announcements.”
