Chiefs to leapfrog Pirates and Sundowns at top spot?

Posted on January 27, 2026

Kaizer Chiefs travel to the Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein to face Marumo Gallants at 19:30.

Victory could potentially lift them above bitter Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates on the log table.

The Glamour Boys currently sit third, just two points behind joint leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and Pirates, who are locked on 29 points.

MARUMO GALLANTS IN BLOEMFONTEIN

Mamelodi Sundowns are first in action on Tuesday, taking on a stubborn and aggressive Sekhukhune United side at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Any slip-up from Kabo Yellow could open the door wide for Kaizer Chiefs to make a statement 24 hours later.

If Sundowns drop points and Amakhosi take care of business against Dikwena Tsa Meetsi, the Soweto giants will lift themselves to the summit.

Gallants have not had a strong season, but there are no easy games in this league. Alexandre Lafitte’s side are 12th in the 2025/2026 Betway Premiership with 15 points from 15 matches.

In the league, Gallants have managed a few wins, including against Orlando Pirates and Chippa United. They have also suffered heavy defeats, such as a 2-0 loss to TS Galaxy recently and a 4-0 thrashing by Golden Arrows.

In cup competitions, they reached the Carling Knockout final but lost 1-0 to Orlando Pirates in extra time.

KAIZER CHIEFS IN THE LEAGUE RACE?

After 14 league matches, Amakhosi have recorded seven wins, six draws, and just one defeat.

Defensively, Kaizer Chiefs have been one of the most reliable sides in the division. They’ve conceded only six goals all season, scored 14 at the other end.

Amakhois remain the only team in the league still unbeaten on the road. Standout players include Flavio Silva. The Guinea-Bissau striker leads the scoring with four goals. Mduduzi Shabalala has added three goals and one assist.

At the back, Brandon Petersen has been the inspiration for Kaizer Chiefs’ defensive success, with 10 clean sheets.
