Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch FC both picked up wins in their opening DStv Diski Challenge fixtures, but Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns were held to draws.
The clash between Amakhosi and Orbit saw the defending champions take the lead in the 13th minute through Pheko Phago who beat Segoe Kopano hands down.
Orbit were then reduced to 10 players early in the game as their captain Ikaneng Ramosala was sent off following a nasty challenge but that did not deter them as Lucky Malatsi equalised after a good combination from the midfield.
When Orbit thought they had it under control, Kabelo Nkgwesa was fouled inside the box and the referee did not hesitate to point to the spot. Neo Bohloko stepped up and made no mistake, as Chiefs led 2-1 going into the break.
Chiefs were then reduced to 10 men in the 63rd minute after Imaad Hendricks received his second yellow card which resulted in a red card.
Amakhosi managed to hold on to their 2-1 lead and won all three points.
Stellies started the season away from home against AmaZulu as last season’s runners-up opened the scoring in the fourth minute after a good solo effort by Kyle Bailey, who took on defenders before unleashing a strike that deflected off Gumede to find the back of the net. In the 15th minute, Stellies extended their lead with a beautiful goal by Keanan Johanessen who met a well-timed cross inside the box and buried it.
Ten minutes before halftime, Kwanele Mbayi pulled one back for Usuthu after a careless play from Stellenbosch defender Liam Slade. The Winelands side went into the break with a 2-1 lead.
Stellenbosch restored their two-goal cushion in the 66th minute, after a great cross played by Johanessen, and Turic Gamildien scored with a beautiful touch to beat the goalkeeper and make it 3-1. Stellies made it 4-1 with Johanessen completing his brace.
