Chiefs’ Mayo introduces teammate to extra training sessions

New Kaizer Chiefs striker Khanyisa Mayo is continuing to win hearts at Amakhosi.

After marking his CAF Confederation Cup debut with a goal against Kabuscorp, the 27-year-old Mayo is now winning praise at Naturena for his off-field attitude.

Instead of celebrating his own start, the former Cape Town City star has been rolling up his sleeves to help teammates.

Duba, 21, is one of the players benefiting. The Lenasia-born forward has revealed that Mayo approached him after their CAF clash with Kabuscorp, urging him to stay behind for one-on-one shooting drills.

“He came to me and said, ‘Let’s put in the work. Just the two of us, extra training, shooting practice,’” Duba told journalists at Naturenaa.

“That really gave me confidence. The experience our strikers bring can only help me get back to my best,” Duba added.

Mayo knows where the net is in the Betway Premiership. In his last season in Mzansi, the 2023/24 season, he scored 11 goals in 31 games for City. In the 2022/23 season, the Mthatha-born star scored 13 goals in 35 games.

GOALS SCORING WOES AT AMAKHOSI

The Phefeni Glamour Boys have played nine games this season, seven in the Betway Premiership and two in the CAF Confederation Cup, where scoring has been a headache. Just eight goals so far shows Chiefs are still struggling to find their killer touch.

Looking back at last season, things weren’t much better. Amakhosi managed only 25 goals in 28 league matches, a tally that left fans frustrated and highlighted serious attacking problems.

That lack of firepower was a big reason they ended ninth on the log. Even with new signings, the early signs suggest Amakhosi still need to sharpen their finishing if they want to climb the table this season.
