Gaston Sirino came off the bench to score and hand Kaizer Chiefs their third successive league victory in the 1-0 win over Richards Bay at FNB Stadium.
The Natal Rich Boys dropped to the bottom of the log with no points in three outings, while Amakhosi are second with nine points from three games.
Chiefs enjoyed the lion’s share of the possession and had better chances at goal but were wasteful in front of goal. Glody Lilepo had two opportunities to break the deadlock, the first coming in the 12th minute from a Thabo Cele pass but that was saved by Salim Magoola.
The other one came in the 20th minute from a Siphesihle Ndlovu play however the DRC national shot over the bar.
Wandile Duba was also in a good scoring position in the box five minutes later when he couldn’t reach a ball from Bradley Cross. In the 38th minute Thabiso Monyane set-up Mduduzi Shabalala however the latter shot over the bar.
In the second half Chiefs wrung in two changes, bringing in Gaston Sirino and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo for Ndlovu and Sibongiseni Mthethwa and that almost had immediate effect with Sirino finding Lilepo two minutes into the half. That shot was cleared by the Richards Bay defense.
Duba had a chance to break the deadlock eight minutes into the half but missed the target with his head.
The 21-year-old redeemed himself a minute later when he set up Sirino who scored a screamer from range to hand Chiefs the lead and ultimately the winner.
Chiefs’ next game is against Mamelodi Sundowns next Wednesday at FNB stadium.
