Chiefs give timeline on Velebayi debut

Posted on September 30, 2025

Kaizer Chiefs have finally shed some light on when fans can expect new signing Asanele Velebayi to wear the gold and black jersey on the green grass.

The winger’s transfer is still under review after Cape Town Spurs’ relentless challenge.

Interim coach Ben Khalil Youssef has now said the paperwork should be sorted in roughly two weeks.

LATEST UPDATE ON KAIZER CHIEFS WINGER ASANELE VELEBAYI

Coach Youssef, chatting to the media in the pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday’s clash against AmaZulu, said: “Velebayi, the paperwork of him will be ready, so I think after these two weeks.”

LEGAL BATTLE

The delay stems from Spurs taking the matter to SAFA to block Velebayi’s free transfer after Spurs’ relegation to the amateur ranks.

Chiefs reportedly tried to sign Velebayi back in January 2024, offering R4 million plus two players, but Spurs turned it down, insisting their young winger was a diamond worth far more.

Following the relegation, Velebayi was a free agent. Still, Spurs believed otherwise. Amakhosi unveiled the winger just a day after the Premier Soccer League Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) cleared the move. Spurs insist they still have a binding contract with the 22-year-old despite their relegation to the amateur ranks.

The DRC, however, ruled that the agreement was null and void because Spurs no longer hold professional status.

The speedy winger from Phillipi, Cape Town, flew to the OR Tambo International Airport to complete his dream move to Amakhosi.

Spurs, furious over the verdict, reportedly paid the R35,000 arbitration fee to appoint an arbitrator, hoping the ruling would be overturned.
