Cardoso Shrugs Off Matthews’ Big Misses Criticism

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has leapt to underfire attacker Tashreeq Matthews’ defense who has come under scrutiny for not burying his chances.

Matthews was again given a stick by a certain section of the club’s fans after missing a glorious chance that would have most likely seen Masandawana walk away with maximum points in their 1-1 draw with Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 first-leg semi-final eSgodini.

Even though he admitted that his wingers did not exploit the spaces despite not dropping back, the Portuguese mentor described Matthews as a ‘very intelligent player’.

“I didn’t want Tasreeq to drop too much, you saw Tashreeq some moments was playing out wide, sometimes was inside and I brought him more inside. So, I fix him more inside so that we could have more aggression because he’s a very intelligent player,” Cardoso said.

“Tashreeq when he plays on the inside he’s very capable to do that.

“As I said before these games are played by men. Computers will not be capable to do this, AI will not do these things.”
