Cardoso Explains Heated Bench Exchange With Alger

Posted on February 15, 2026

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has explained how a heated bench exchange with MC Alger came about.

While he stated that “there was nothing special” that happened between the two benches, Cardoso admitted that he “went too far”.

He revealed that he was giving instructions to his player Thapelo Morena and found himself, stepping on the area he wasn’t supposed to, “approaching too much to the opposition’s bench”.

“Regarding the benches, nothing special happened, what happened was that I approached too much [to the opposition bench],” said Cardoso.

“And I was speaking to my player, Thapelo Morena to say, focus on the game and on playing, you saw me. I went too far, nothing more but I came back to my bench.”

On the yellow card he was handed, he said, “Of course [I was given a yellow card] because I got out of my bench because I cannot get out of my zone,” he added.

“The referee came to me and said stay in your zone. He had warned me once that I went to give instruction to my player, second time, he gave me a yellow card.

“Champions League matches, nothing more. Absolutely, nothing more, don’t create something that doesn’t exist. But expect a Champions League match to be emotional from both sides, but nothing more.”
